at the last minute, plans changed for jano’s birthday dinner festivities. it worked out in the end, for sure. owner ended up being someone we knew, and he hooked us up with a few things (including the above sashimi) without us even asking.

gumbo ya-ya - house andouille and gunthorp farm chicken in cajun roux with steamed popcorn rice.

crawfish boudin rice fritters with frisee, cayenne mayonnaise, piccalilli.

migas - farm egg and corn tortilla scramble, tomato, chiles, black beans, spicy red sauce, avocado, sour cream.

jonah crab cakes with fried cauliflower, horseradish veal.

lunch on a weekday at big jones means the $20 three-course prix fixe menu. to some restaurants providing a prix fixe menu means picking a couple of their cheapest-to-make dishes among maybe one or two signature dishes. but here you’ll find a list of things you’ll actually want. the portions aren’t any smaller than a full order so it only makes sense to do it when you’re here for lunch when a bowl of shrimp & grits would already run you $16 otherwise. the catch is you will need full participation of your party to take advantage of it. luckily we were only a party of 5.

one last thing, they’re located right across one of my favorite sweet spots in the city: swedish bakery.
